Zion National Park Trail Guide

Observation   Point

Experience panoramic views of Zion Canyon and the iconic Watchman formation on one of the park’s most accessible moderate hikes.

Overview

Why Hike Observation Point

The Watchman Trail is one of the most rewarding moderate hikes in Zion National Park. Located near the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, the trail climbs gradually above the valley floor and provides sweeping views of the lower canyon and surrounding red rock formations.

Because the trail begins outside the main canyon shuttle corridor, visitors can access it directly from the visitor center without waiting for the park shuttle. This makes it one of the most convenient hikes in Zion.

As hikers gain elevation along the trail, the landscape opens into wide panoramic viewpoints featuring the Virgin River valley and the towering sandstone walls that define Zion’s dramatic scenery.

The trail is especially popular at sunrise and sunset when warm light illuminates the Watchman peak and the surrounding canyon walls.

One of the Most Iconic Hikes in the World

Emerald Pools Trail Overview

The Emerald Pools Trail consists of three main destinations that gradually climb higher along the canyon wall.

Visitors can hike to one or all of the pools depending on how much time and energy they want to spend on the trail.

The three pools include:

Each level offers different scenery and viewpoints, making it easy to customize the hike based on experience level.

One of the Highest Viewpoints in Zion

Why This Hike Is Famous

Observation Point is famous for its unmatched panoramic view of Zion Canyon.

From the summit, hikers can look down onto the canyon floor and see famous landmarks such as Angels Landing from above. Few viewpoints in the park offer this perspective.

Because the viewpoint rises higher than much of the surrounding canyon terrain, the sweeping desert landscape stretches for miles in every direction.

This makes Observation Point one of the most photographed locations in Zion National Park.

The East Mesa Route

What to Expect on the Trail

Today, the East Mesa Trail is the most common route used to reach Observation Point.
The trail travels across forested plateau terrain before reaching the canyon edge. Compared to many Zion hikes, the route is less exposed and has a more gradual elevation change.

As hikers approach the edge of Zion Canyon, the landscape suddenly opens to reveal dramatic cliffs and expansive canyon views.

The final viewpoint offers one of the most memorable perspectives in the entire park.

Why Observation Point Is Worth the Hike

Observation Point delivers one of the most breathtaking perspectives in Zion National Park. Unlike many popular trails, the viewpoint provides a high elevation panorama of the entire canyon system, making it a favorite among experienced hikers and photographers. For visitors seeking a memorable Zion adventure with incredible views and fewer crowds, Observation Point is one of the best hikes in Southern Utah.

Location   and Access

The East Mesa Trailhead is located outside the main Zion Canyon corridor near the Zion Ponderosa Ranch area.
Because it sits above the canyon, the trail offers a more gradual climb compared to routes starting on the canyon floor.
Visitors should check current road conditions before driving to the trailhead.
